DuckDuckGo downgraded Russian state media in search results

The DuckDuckGo search engine has downgraded sites that are covered by “Russian disinformation” in the issuance - we are talking about Russian state media. According to the company, such sites deliberately mislead users.

The head of DuckDuckGo, Gabriel Weinberg, spoke about the decrease in the issuance of resources of Russian state media on Twitter. He noted that the main goal of the search engine will remain the issuance of relevant content. In contrast, high-quality information will stand out in search results, he says. However, Weinberg did not name any criteria for such information.

In addition, the head of the company did not name which Russian state media sites would be downgraded in the DuckDuckGo search results. It is also unclear whether the search engine will deal with other types of disinformation in the same way, such as about COVID-19.

Earlier, the posts of Russian state media were also downgraded in the issuance of Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta. Google has been lowering the rating of such media sites since 2017. Alphabet chief executive Eric Schmidt said at the time that the company would fight "the Russian disinformation strategy."

On March 1, DuckDuckGo announced that it would suspend cooperation with Yandex, which gave the search engine access to its database of indexed sites.
