GitLab suspends sales in Russia and Belarus

On March 11, 2022, the GitLab administration announced the suspension of sales of its corporate and paid services in Russia and Belarus for new customers.

GitLab explained that it will be monitoring the situation and will continue to comply with export controls and regulatory restrictions for corporate customers.

“We understand that the situation is dynamic, and GitLab is reviewing and updating its business practices accordingly,” the company said.

On March 3, 2022, representatives of the GitLab administration responded to the demand for the immediate blocking of all Russian developers. They closed the discussion with the wording: every member of the Open Source community is important and valuable to the platform.

GitLab users discussed the need to disable all developers from the Russian Federation. The discussion went on for 4 days. Most of the arguments were made by one of the parties. In her opinion, closing access to GitLab and revoking licenses for GitLab Enterprise will force Russian IT specialists to be blocked, cut off, leave them without support for their projects, they will not be able to work, they will not be able to pay taxes, and this will be an extremely beneficial effect on the Russian IT community .

Then GitLab said that every developer has the right to contribute to Open Source without restrictions. The platform will assist all developers in this mission, according to its values and culture of respect. This is what best keeps the GitLab community in balance.

On March 2, 2022, representatives of the GitHub web service for hosting IT projects and their joint development ended the dispute over whether Russian developers should be blocked. The platform said that it will monitor the situation and will not allow everyone, including ordinary developers, to get blocked.

The position of the platform was confirmed by GitHub CEO Thomas Domke. He said that GitHub will continue to make free and open source services available to everyone, including developers from Russia. According to him, GitHub is a powerful tool for communication, development and team changes to projects, as well as incredible technological progress. The GitHub team truly believes in the power of open source, and will continue to work hard to ensure that the IT platform is accessible and secure for all developers around the world.

Domcke stated that GitHub will support every developer around the world, regardless of their nationality or country of origin. The welfare of the developers is paramount to the platform. All developers can count on full GitHub support.
