Transfers through Sberbank Online abroad will not be available in cash after March 17

Sber informs that transfers abroad through Sberbank Online will be available in the form of cash only until March 17, 2022.

“If you recently sent transfers abroad to Sberbank Online using your full name and phone number, in order for the recipient to receive money in cash, ask the recipient to pick it up as soon as possible,” the bank says.

According to representatives of Sberbank, these transfers went through Western Union, which stops working in Russia.

Thus, if you do not pick up cash before March 17, they will automatically return to the card until March 22.

Sberbank explained that it is possible to transfer money abroad by phone number in a non-cash form, credited to a card or account in a foreign bank. A complete list of banks and countries is available here.

Earlier, Western Union announced that from March 24 it will reduce the limit for domestic payments in Russia to 5,000 rubles. Previously, this limit was from 50,000 to $7,500 (570,000 rubles), depending on the terms of the transfer. From April 1, the payment system will stop making transfers within Russia.

In 2021, Russians were reported to have transferred around $44 billion abroad, up 9.5% from a year earlier. Of this amount, $12.8 billion fell on transfers to the CIS countries.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank demanded from European banks to increase control over the operations of clients from Russia and Belarus in the EU, who were not included in the lists of sanctions.
