Apple and Samsung no longer rule the ball in the Russian smartphone market

According to MTS, Xiaomi ranked first in smartphone sales in Russia in the second quarter of 2022, pushing Samsung to second place. Demand for products from other manufacturers from China in the Russian market is also growing - according to smartphone sellers, these products already occupy two-thirds of the Russian market. The expansion of Chinese devices is taking place against the backdrop of the cessation of sales of Apple and Samsung gadgets to Russia, whose share in the smart phone segment has noticeably decreased, experts explain.

In real terms, Xiaomi's share in the Russian market increased by 4.8 p.p. compared to January-March. up to 30.6%. Other Chinese manufacturers are also strengthening their positions, according to MTS calculations. For example, Realme's share increased from 8.3% to 13%.

According to "M. Video – Eldorado”, the share of Chinese brands in the Russian market in the second quarter was 65%, while in June it reached 70%. At the beginning of the year, it did not exceed 50%, an employee of one of the retailers told Izvestia earlier.

Apple and Samsung in early March announced the suspension of deliveries and official sales of their equipment in Russia, so the positions of these two companies have significantly decreased. If in the first quarter of this year, Samsung occupied 33% of it in physical terms, then in April-June this share decreased to 18.5%, that is, more than 1.5 times. Apple's figure fell from 15.3% to 10.6%.

Sales of Apple in the Russian Federation in pieces in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year decreased by 49%, Samsung - by 62%, calculated in MTS.

All these shifts are taking place in a shrinking market - in general, sales of smartphones in Russia in the second quarter of this year decreased by 33% compared to the first, an employee of one of the retailers noted.

“Traditionally, sales in the second quarter are always weaker than in the first - in particular, because the holidays on February 23 and March 8 fall at the beginning of the year. In addition, this year in the first quarter there was a rush demand for equipment - they were bought up, fearing sanctions and cessation of supplies. But, if we compare sales year-on-year, in April-June compared to the same months of 2021, they decreased by 30%, ”said the Izvestia source.

According to him, in the second quarter of this year, in money terms, the market sank by 42% compared to the previous quarter and by 30% compared to the same period last year.

The average check for a smartphone in Russia in the second quarter of the year amounted to 23 thousand rubles, the Izvestia source in one of the retailers specified. According to him, it decreased by 15% compared to the first quarter, but remained at the level of April-June last year.

Having stopped deliveries to Russia, Samsung and Apple have pretty much ruined their image, says Sergey Polovnikov, head of the Content-Review project. “This is due to the removal of applications from stores, and the extreme difficulty of activating smartphones purchased in another country. At the same time, the Chinese did not stop deliveries and at the same time were able to keep prices,” he recalled.

According to Sergey Polovnikov, now Chinese smartphones in general are in no way inferior to Apple and Samsung products in terms of equipment and functionality, in terms of price and quality ratio.

“Perhaps, while Chinese devices are losing in terms of the interface, but against the background of reasonable prices, this is absolutely not important,” the expert believes.

The actual departure of Honor and Huawei opens the way to the Russian market for many other Chinese brands, often unknown to domestic buyers, Denis Kuskov, CEO of TelecomDaily, is sure. In "M. Video-Eldorado” confirmed that consumers have refocused towards Chinese manufacturers.
