Another Amazon Warehouse Employees Apply to Form a Union

Amazon warehouse workers in Albany, New York, have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for union elections. The ALB1 warehouse staff intends to create a unit that will include approximately 400 people.

To apply to organize a union, the petition must be signed by more than 30% of the warehouse staff. This process is controlled by the NLRB, the organization plans to check the appeal within a few days and start preparing the vote.

Albany workers are included in the Amazon Labor Union, which voted to form a union organization at Amazon's JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island in April of this year. However, at LDJ5, also in Staten Island, workers voted against the merger. Warehouse workers in Bessemer teamed up with the Retailers, Wholesalers and Department Stores Union (RWDSU), but the results of the March union elections were canceled due to Amazon meddling. Due to opposition from the company in Bessemer, the results of the second vote were not recognized.

Amazon spokesman Paul Flanigan said the company's employees have a choice whether or not to join a union. He emphasizes that the bundling is not the best solution for Amazon workers. Flanigan notes that the company's focus is on working directly with the state to continue making Amazon "the best place to work."

Between August 3 and 4, approximately 800 employees left Amazon warehouses in the UK. Employees complained about low wages and poor working conditions. Amazon continues to refuse to cooperate with unions, according to British workers' rights organization GMB.

In June, Vice reported that Amazon was monitoring the productivity of warehouse workers. The company uses data from barcode scanners for control. When the device is not used for a long time, employees are required to explain the reasons for inaction. In some situations, it comes to layoffs. Documents confirming the surveillance were handed over to the NLRB by the JFK8 warehouse union.

In April, independent organization Amazonians United accused the company of illegally laying off four employees in New York. Amazon laid off workers because of their stance on unionization.

Earlier in April, RWDSU complained to the NRLB about Amazon, which threatened employees with the closure of the Bessemer facility if they voted to unionize. In addition, Amazon banned the distribution of relevant literature and monitored employees.
