Greece begins fines for unvaccinated seniors

From January 16, the Greek authorities will begin to fine people over 60 who have not been vaccinated against coronavirus. Unvaccinated senior citizens will be fined €100 every month, in January the amount will be €60, RIA Novosti reports.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis explained this measure by an increase in the number of infected people and the emergence of a new strain of coronavirus "omicron". According to him, the majority of those hospitalized and those who died with coronavirus in the country are citizens over 60 years old.

“This is not a punishment. I would say that this is the price of health. A precautionary stimulus, a life impulse, but I believe it is also an act of justice for a much larger number of those who are vaccinated. My decision means protection, not punishment,” the prime minister said.

Greek government spokesman Yiannis Ikonomou said the state would not delay the introduction of the fine.

Earlier, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov ruled out the introduction of fines in the country for refusing to be vaccinated against coronavirus. This is how he commented on the information about the plans of the Austrian authorities to impose a fine for refusing to be vaccinated in the amount of up to €7,200.
