This Tiny Sensor Powers Itself on Battery Waves

Scientists at the Eindhoven University of Technology have created a tiny temperature sensor, that's only 2 millimeters and weights 1,6 mg. But it can do something few other sensors can: run on no power.

Actually, it requires a little power, but it's enough that it can get it all from radio waves, powering the sensor from a wireless device nearby. Also a special router had been designed for it, which consumes a minimal amount of energy. So far isn't good for long range use yet – it has to be one inch or less away, however the team is working toward extending the range, and feel confident that it will work at 10 feet away, then 16.

Such device can be used for wireless IDs, banking services or "smart home" systems, where it will be able to measure not only temperature but also humidity level.
