Hong Kong Home Affairs Secretary Caspar Cui resigned on Monday amid a scandal over his and a group of other local government officials violating measures against the spread of the coronavirus. It is reported by TASS.
“As one of the leaders in the fight against the epidemic, I did not set the best example during the recent outbreak of infection. I made the wrong decision to attend the January 3rd banquet and acted inappropriately. I take responsibility for my actions and resign,” Cui said.
The publication notes that more than 15 officials, including the police commissioner and director of immigration, and a group of 20 lawmakers attended the birthday banquet for the Hong Kong National People's Congress deputy. The event was held in violation of anti-coronavirus measures and was attended by a guest diagnosed with COVID-19.
Earlier in Beijing, on the eve of the start of the Winter Olympic Games, 20 cases of coronavirus infection were detected, which is the maximum value since June 2020.
