A US police officer became a social media hero when he rescued a dog from a burning car, NDTV reports.

According to media reports, Deputy Sheriff Michael Gregorek was driving by when he noticed a burning car. The owner was running around the car, shouting that his dog named Hank, who needed urgent help, was left in the cabin.

Rescuers who arrived at the scene broke the glass in the car so that the dog could get out, but because of the crumpled metal, the animal could not do it. Hank's owner tried to pull the pet out, but was also powerless.

Realizing that it was impossible to hesitate, Michael took the situation into his own hands and pulled the dog out of the burning car, inhaling the acrid smoke.

“At that moment, I thought I would pull the dog out, no matter what happens,” the officer said.

Netizens praised Gregorek for rescuing the dog, calling him a true hero.

“Great job, Michael,” wrote the audience.
