Russia - Moskalkova: Laws should improve the Ombudsman institution in Russia

Russia (bbabo.net), - The Ombudsman's Institute celebrates its anniversary: 25 years ago, a law on the Ombudsman was adopted in Russia. The parliamentary hearings dedicated to this began with a Zoom-thank you from the Cherepannikov family, whom Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova recently helped return home to Naryan-Mar from Kazakhstan. Following them, Moskalkova was thanked by Oleg Nikitin, who was returned to his homeland from an American prison through the efforts of the Russian Ombudsman.

In total, over 25 years of work of the Institute of the Commissioner for Human Rights, only at the federal level, more than 780,000 appeals were considered, 21,000 citizens were accepted, and the rights of more than 100,000 people were restored. "The institution of the Ombudsman for Human Rights has taken place in Russia," Tatyana Moskalkova summed up the first result, emphasizing that, of course, it needs to be improved, and above all in the legislative sphere. Yesterday's parliamentary hearings were just an attempt to sketch out a "road map" for its further development.

The well-known politician Vladimir Lukin recalled at the hearings about the authors of the law that is still in force and about the evolution of the people who were in this position, and our ideas about them. Tatyana Moskalkova is one of the most striking examples here. Her appointment was greeted with caution, after all, the general of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is not associated with human rights. But today, according to Vladimir Lukin, the sharpest critics speak of her work with great respect. According to the head of the HRC Valery Fadeev, the institution of human rights protection has become a part of social life. Maria Lvova-Belova called the institution of the Ombudsman "an instance of last resort" and spoke about the creation of a classifier of appeals to the children's ombudsman.
