Russia (bbabo.net), - From September 2022, a new faculty, the Higher School of Software Engineering, will start working at the Moscow Phystech. The set will open this summer.
- It will be a small faculty - only 36 budget places. The peculiarity of the school is the opportunity from the very beginning, from the first semester, to get in touch with real projects. It is the project that will be a key element of the educational program, - says the head of the faculty, director of the Center for the Development of IT Education at MIPT Alexei Maleev.
The school is a joint initiative of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Yandex, so students will be taught not only by university professors, but also by real developers. In the first year of study, you can work on the case yourself, in the subsequent years you need to join the team.
“Students do their internship right at the place of study – there is no need to go anywhere: education is already built on practical tasks,” Alexey Maleev explained.
As planned, students of the new school will spend a third of their time on the project, a third on the so-called nuclear program (mandatory for all disciplines), and a third on electives, courses that everyone will choose for themselves, depending on their project. So each student will have their own individual track. Major disciplines include calculus, linear algebra, algorithms, Java and C++ programming languages, discrete mathematics, and operating systems architecture. The basic program also includes lectures on financial literacy, the basics of communication and startup management.
- We expect that strong guys will come to us, for the most part - winners of the Olympiads. A new faculty is "imprisoned" under them, - Alexey Maleev admitted. - Training is designed for four years. At the "output" we plan to get developers of at least an average level, people who know and understand the tools that are used in the IT industry. Our graduates will be able to work both in large companies, such as Yandex, and in small start-ups.
According to Maleev, the demand for this kind of specialists is huge today. This can be seen from the level of salaries: some employers are ready to offer young professionals up to 200 thousand per month. In addition, if you look at universities, there are not so many such faculties where they would be engaged exclusively in software development. “Traditional faculties still prevail – Mechanics and Mathematics, Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics. But this is still a classical education. But there are clearly not enough engineering schools.
