A resident of Moscow saw racial discrimination in Nike ads

A resident of Moscow, Evgeny Smirnov, filed an application with the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation with a request to check Nike advertising in Russia for racial discrimination. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the applicant.

In his appeal, it is said that almost all the models on the company's website are representatives of other races. While, according to Smirnov, the majority of Russian citizens are Caucasians.

The man claims that he tried to resolve this issue on his own, contacting Nike support and offering "free help in the selection of models to eliminate racial imbalance." However, according to him, he was refused. In addition, the company did not explain on what basis it selected models, he added.

“The reluctance to eliminate the racial imbalance and listen to the opinion of a representative of the race that makes up the majority of the country's population is a direct fact of discrimination and disrespect for the country's population,” Smirnov explained.

In 2020, the Nike brand has already faced backlash for ads that allegedly highlighted racial discrimination in the country. The video, published by the sports brand, chronicled the lives of three footballers of mixed heritage. One of them was from Japan, and the inhabitants of this country are not used to openly discussing racial issues, while Nike, as it seemed to them, as if on purpose wanted to exaggerate the scale of discrimination and highlight this particular state. In Japan, they even threatened to boycott the brand's products.
