VTsIOM: More than a third of Russians believe that the metaverse will do more harm than good

Russia (bbabo.net), - Over a third of the study participants - 37% of Russians - are convinced that the creation of metaverses will bring more social harm than good. And only 9% expressed confidence that the phenomenon of immersion in meta-events is positive. True, more than half of the respondents - 69% said that they would not be interested in visiting the metaverse. These are the results of the VTsIOM poll.

The fact that the creation of metauniverses will bring more harm is more often stated by 35-44-year-old respondents - 45%. Mostly young people aged 18-24 speak about the preferential benefit - 23%. Approximately 19% believe that the creation of metaverses in equal shares will bring both good and bad. 18% expressed the opinion that the new phenomenon will neither harm nor benefit.

Among those who consider the phenomenon of meta-possessed people to be harmful to psychological health, they primarily point to immersion in virtual reality and the danger of falling out of their reality - 37%, lack of live communication - 11%, degradation of the personality and its tendency to autism - 9%. On the contrary, those who express belief in the benefits of metaverses believe that they provide more opportunities for communication - 14%, broaden their horizons - 13%, simplify the search for information - 8% and testify to technological progress - also 8%.

More than a quarter - 27% of respondents - admitted that they would be interested in visiting the metaverse as their digital counterpart. This interest is mainly expressed by young people aged 18 to 24 (56%).

Commenting on the results of the survey, Advisor to the General Director of VTsIOM Elena Mikhailova admitted that "the prospects for creating metaverses both beckon and frighten. It is tempting to create your own digital avatar, which actively participates in meetings and negotiations thanks to artificial intelligence. At the same time, philosophers discuss issues of life after death in social networks, the prospects for creating digital twins, but they also express fears of "freezing" in the digital world of a person and his painful dependence on the metauniverse.
