Russia - Scientists predict flu return after omicron outbreak

Russia (bbabo.net), - Influenza and other respiratory diseases will return again after the decrease in the incidence of "omicron". This was stated by the director of the Institute of Influenza. Smorodintseva Dmitry Lioznov.

He explained that according to the theory of virus interference, only one of them can dominate. So, in 2020, against the backdrop of the emergence of coronavirus, influenza almost completely disappeared in the entire European region of the World Health Organization (this is almost all of Eurasia). In the current epidemiological season, which began in the fall, we have also repeatedly observed how, against the backdrop of an increase in the number of cases of COVID-19, the detection of influenza has decreased. "For example, the surge in omicron coincided with a decrease in the number of cases of influenza infection," Lioznov said at a Rospotrebnadzor webinar.

According to him, by the spring we can expect a decrease in new cases of coronavirus and an increase in the number of cases of influenza and SARS. He also recalled that this year the influenza A virus H3N2 dominates, the B virus is less frequently registered. All identified strains were taken into account when creating influenza vaccines.

By the way, the influenza A H1N1 virus is not registered in Russia for the first time in several years.

Rospotrebnadzor believes that flu vaccination has affected the decline in influenza circulation in the country. Last year, more than 60% of Russians were vaccinated; this year, almost half of the country's population has been vaccinated against influenza.
