The champion of the USSR explained why raising the qualification is not directed against Russian figure skaters

Three-time USSR champion in compulsory figures Hasmik Vardanyan explained why the increase in the age limit from 15 to 17 years is not directed against Russian figure skaters.

“In no way do I think that the International Skating Union (ISU) is trying to stop our girls in this way. It only makes it possible for those athletes who could prove themselves at a more mature age to remain in figure skating. This is not done to spite our skaters.

30+ years ago I had to give up skating because younger athletes came after me. And if this process happened more gradually, then I could ride much longer.

But alas, everyone shrugged and said: “Well, I'm sorry. No matter how beautifully you ride and spin, you do not have the jumping arsenal that you should have now. The same problem persists through many, many years.

I can say about Lisa Tuktamysheva, Carolina Kostner, Maria Butyrskaya that this is women's figure skating. And we need to distinguish between women's and youth skating - then we will clearly understand who we are looking at and who we are training, ”said Vardanyan.

Earlier, Hasmik Vardanyan explained why raising the age limit to 17 would save figure skating.
