Turkish activists stand up for Indian students

Turkish non-governmental organizations have held demonstrations in Turkey to protest a hijab ban for girls in educational institutions in the Indian state of Karnataka, according to the Daily Sabah.

Popular performances were organized by the Özgürder Society for Freedom of Thought and Rights to Education, as well as the Mazlumder Society for Solidarity with the Oppressed.

In Istanbul, the action took place in front of the Indian Consulate.

The protesters called the hijab ban the culmination of a violation of Muslim rights and Indian nationalism.

The head of the Society for Freedom of Thought and Rights to Education, Özgürder, stressed that the oppression of India's 200,000 Muslim population must end.

In India itself, student performances have been going on for more than two weeks. They began when the Supreme Court of Karnataka banned schoolchildren and students of both sexes from attending classes in religious dress. The ban hit Muslim women especially hard, who, when leaving the house, are required to cover their heads with a headscarf. Note that the court's decision is contrary to the constitution, which guarantees people the freedom to wear what they like.
