Boxing champion sentenced to death

In Iran, local boxer Mohammad Javad Wafai-Sani was sentenced to death. The reason is participation in the protests of 2019. This was announced on Twitter by his lawyer Babak Paknia, writes bbabo.net.

The death sentence came just over a year after the execution of the national wrestling champion. In September 2020, 27-year-old Navid Afkari was hanged. Before his execution, he complained that he was forced under torture to confess to participation in protests against the authorities and the murder of a security official.

The Norwegian-based Iranian Human Rights NGO (IHR) said the 26-year-old boxer was sentenced on charges of "arson and destruction of government buildings." He was arrested in February 2020

Vafaei-Sani is called the champion of the country in boxing among juniors or the champion of the city of Mashhad in the east of the country: there he is currently in custody.

On social networks, people are calling to save his life, the hashtag #SaveMohammadJavad is popular on Twitter. According to AFP, more people are executed in Iran every year than in any other country except China.

In 2020, a 22-year-old prospect from El Salvador was shot dead during a gang fight. And a year earlier, the Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of Afghanistan was shot dead.
