Irreparable Damage. The IOC reacted to the scandal with the Russian figure skater at the Olympics

Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Denis Oswald said that the removal of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva from participating in the women's free program at the 2022 Olympics could cause irreparable damage to her, R-Sport reports.

On February 14, the visiting commission of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) made a decision on the issue of lifting the temporary suspension of Valieva.

CAS did not uphold the appeals of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Skating Union (ISU) in the Valieva case. Thus, the Russian figure skater was allowed to participate in the individual tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

In the women's free program, due to the situation with Valieva, 25 instead of 24 athletes will perform.

"The decision was made by CAS, it is an independent body. The IOC is a signatory, its decision is binding on all signatories. Until we get the justification, we do not know the motives of the court. Previously, the main thing was that if the athlete were suspended, then irreparable damage, while if she wins the gold, the medals can always be forfeited. Presumably that was the reason we should respect this decision," Oswald told reporters.

"No law provides for a life suspension. And at the same time, the case is ongoing, no final decision has been made. The suspension, obviously not for life, will be imposed only when a decision is made whether it is doping or not. Sanctions on the environment can be imposed only after how WADA will investigate. When an athlete is 15 years old, naturally, the actions of the environment will be investigated," he added.

Earlier, the International Doping Testing Agency (ITA) announced that trimetazidine, which is on the WADA list of banned substances, was found in Valieva’s doping test taken on December 25, 2021 at the Russian Championship.

Recall that Valieva as part of the Russian national team won gold in the team tournament in Beijing 2022. Earlier, the Russian woman was supported by Kazakhstani Elisabeth Tursynbayeva.
