1980 Olympic champion Sidorenko dies of COVID-19 in Ukraine

The winner of the 1980 Olympic Games in the 400m medley Alexander Sidorenko has died at the age of 62, according to the website of the All-Russian Swimming Federation.

“On February 20, as a result of a coronavirus infection, the Olympic champion, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR Alexander Sidorenko passed away. The All-Russian Swimming Federation expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Alexander Alexandrovich, ”the message says.

On account of Sidorenko, the gold of the European championships (1981) and the world (1982), as well as the bronze medal of the world and European championships at a distance of 200 m in individual swimming.

“I received information from Ukraine that the Olympic champion Alexander Sidorenko has died, this is unexpected news. Sidorenko belonged to the golden galaxy of Ukrainian swimmers, this man was like a machine. Of course, this is a great tragedy, he was a very good person. Probably, this galaxy is leaving, and it becomes sad, ”Viktor Avdienko, vice president of the All-Russian Swimming Federation, told TASS.

Sidorenko was born in Zhdanov (now Mariupol), in 1977-1986 he became the champion of the USSR in individual swimming 20 times, he received the title of master of sports at the age of 16. In 1978, he set a world record in the 200-meter complex, and the following year he was recognized as the best swimmer in the country.
