Austria supported the launch of Nord Stream 2

Austrian Minister of Digitalization and Economy Margarethe Schrambeck said that Vienna does not plan to abandon the launch of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if Russia does not attack Ukraine. She said this on the air of the ORF2 TV channel.

“I know that there are countries that want Austria to abandon Nord Stream 2 altogether. This will not happen on my part and on the part of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, because we, as a state, have invested a lot [in the gas pipeline] through [the Austrian oil and gas company] OMV,” the minister said.

According to her, if there is no Russian invasion, then Nord Stream 2 should be put into operation.

Schrambeck noted that Russia is fulfilling all agreements on gas supplies to Austria, which is sufficiently supplied with this resource. These deliveries were made even during the worst of the Cold War, she added.

Earlier, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the United States continues to oppose the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and will not allow it to be launched in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine.
