Russia plans to switch to a domestic analogue in case the country is disconnected from SWIFT

Russia, in the event of its disconnection from SWIFT, can switch to a domestic analogue or other information transmission systems. This was stated by Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, RIA Novosti reports.

According to him, Western countries have recently begun to understand that if Russia is disconnected from the international system, not only the Russian Federation will suffer, but also they themselves.

“If they want to suffer so that we suffer together, then this is justified. I read information that the SWIFT issue is being postponed, although nothing is impossible. Their decisions, we see, are reviewed quite often,” said the head of the RF Ministry of Finance.

SWIFT is an international transaction exchange system and is used by thousands of banks around the world, including Russia. The threat of disconnecting Russian banks from SWIFT has been periodically discussed since 2014 in connection with the annexation of Crimea, and this is one of the most serious sanctions threats, according to foreign countries. Despite this, the company itself states that turning off Russia “is not beneficial to anyone” and poses dangers to foreign partners, therefore it makes no sense to do this.

Nevertheless, in 2014, the Bank of Russia created an analogue of SWIFT as a response to the potential threat of shutdown - the Bank of Russia Financial Message Transmission System (SPFS). More details - in the material.

Earlier, Reuters, citing a representative of the French presidential administration, reported that Western countries are discussing sanctions aimed at restricting Russia's access to the SWIFT international interbank system.
