US wants to deprive Russians of iPhones

American media report on the preparation of new sanctions against Russia. So, the United States plans to ban the export of smartphones to the country, in particular Apple and Huawei. In addition, parts for aircraft and cars may be subject to restrictions. Such measures are expected to undermine the Russian economy if Moscow decides to invade Ukraine.

US sanctions: supply restrictions

In the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US authorities may impose strict export controls. According to a White House spokesman, this will help undermine the Russian economy. This was reported to Reuters with reference to a source in the administration of US President Joe Biden.

The sanctions are expected to complement the economic restrictions the Biden administration intends to impose in the event of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. In early December, the American president pledged destructive action in the event of a violation of the peace on his border.

New sanctions, which are planned for discussion, include "emergency" export controls. They will block Russia's access to the market for smartphones, aircraft and car parts. In addition, the sanctions may affect goods from other sectors.

An anonymous source of the American publication believes that such restrictions will seriously affect not only the Russian economy, but also the Russians themselves - consumers, businesses and employment.

To restrict exports, the United States intends to hold consultations with leading partners in Europe and Asia. United States officials intend to encourage coordinated work with companies whose products may be blocked for Russia.

According to Reuters, the Russian cell phone market is dominated by Apple, Samsung and Huawei. This year they came under a new law on installing Russian software on smartphones.

Disconnecting from SWIFT

CNN also previously reported that American and European politicians are considering disconnecting Russia from the interbank SWIFT system. More than 11 thousand of the largest organizations around the world are connected to it. With SWIFT, companies can transfer information and make payments.

Bloomberg wrote that Washington and Brussels may impose restrictions on large Russian banks and RDIF. Foreigners want to limit the conversion of rubles into other currencies.

In Ukraine, meanwhile, they already imagine how destructive such measures will turn out to be for Russia.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, disconnecting from SWIFT would be “grandiose”. He called this version of the sanctions "nuclear".

Washington said that such measures would be tantamount to complete isolation of Moscow from the global financial system. Thus, the Democrat from New Jersey, Robert Menendez, believes that in this way the American authorities can destroy the "Russian banking sector."

“The sovereign debt will be blocked. Sectoral sanctions will cripple the Russian economy. Let me be clear: these are not ordinary sanctions. What is being discussed is the maximum in this spectrum [of possible restrictions] or, as I call it, the mother of all sanctions, ”Menendez said in early December, discussing the possible disconnection of Russia from SWIFT.

Why and for what sanctions

In October, Western media began to report on the accumulation of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine. A month later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported 100,000 Russian troops stationed there. This was followed by numerous statements by the American and European authorities about what measures might follow if Russia invaded Ukraine.

The Russian side has repeatedly stated that it is not going to attack anyone. As for the deployment of its troops at the Russian-Ukrainian border, this is the business of Russia, since the troops move exclusively on their territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that it is the North Atlantic Alliance that is making "dangerous attempts to conquer Ukrainian territory." He believes that the Russian threat is "an invention of those who want to profit from their role as a vanguard in the fight against Russia, to receive some bonuses and preferences for this."
