Russia - Why sales of non-alcoholic beer are growing rapidly in Russia

Russia (bbabo.net), - Sales of non-alcoholic beer in Russia continue to grow at double-digit rates. This is facilitated by the explosive growth of online trade (where the sale of alcohol is prohibited), the desire of Russians for a healthy lifestyle, and an increasing variety of tastes.

By the end of 2021, the production of non-alcoholic beer in Russia will grow by 11-13%: up to 17.1-17.4 million decaliters, according to the Association of Beer Producers (APP). This is the only segment of the beer market that is growing at double-digit rates. Thus, in the first nine months of the year, sales of strong beer grew by 6%, of medium strength - by 2%, and sales of low-alcohol beers fell by 7%.

Among the reasons for the popularity of non-alcoholic beer in the AMS is the explosive growth of online trading during the pandemic. The trend towards a healthy lifestyle and a variety of tastes also contributes to the growth in sales of non-alcoholic beer. Not only classic lagers are produced, but also numerous types of unfiltered beer. So far, the share of non-alcoholic beer on the Russian alcohol market is small - 2.4%, while in Sweden - 13%, in Spain - about 10%, in Germany - 7%. In five years, it has doubled in our country. Over the next five years, the segment has all the prerequisites to reach 4%, according to the APT.

The share of non-alcoholic beer in Russia is negligible and is unlikely to grow much, says the director of the Center for Research on Federal and Regional Alcohol Markets (TsIFRRA). Even less in our country (no more than 0.5%) it is customary to drink non-alcoholic champagne or wine. And the growth in sales has nothing to do with the rejection of alcohol or the prohibition of online sales of alcohol; such drinks compete not with beer, but with cola, kvass and other non-alcoholic ones. Non-alcoholic beer helps producers advertise their regular beer, as alcohol advertising in Russia is very limited, says Drobiz.
