The Russian airline Aeroflot has closed the sale of air tickets for flights to Kazakhstan until January 20 and from Kazakhstan to Russia until January 21. The company also canceled all flights to Kazakhstan and back until January 10 and 11, respectively, writes TASS, citing a message from the air carrier.

On January 2, mass protests began in Kazakhstan. This happened after the government decided to raise gas prices from 60 to 120 tenge. The protests quickly escalated into riots and clashes with the police. On January 4, the government commission announced its decision to reduce the gas price to 50 tenge. On the night of January 5, Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev announced the introduction of 180-day state regulation of prices for fuel and food in the country.

Later, he also turned to the countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), including Russia, for help in overcoming the "terrorist threat".

On January 6, Aeroflot suspended ticket sales for flights to Kazakhstan for the next two weeks amid protests in the country. The carrier also canceled all flights to and from Kazakhstan on January 6 and 7.

Earlier it was reported that more than 160 of 216 domestic flights scheduled for Saturday in Kazakhstan were canceled.
