Politico: Nuland opposes sanctions against Nord Stream 2

US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland and senior adviser on global energy security at the State Department Amos Hochstein told Democratic senators about the disagreement of the US presidential administration with sanctions against Nord Stream 2. This was reported by Politico correspondent Andrew Desiderio on Twitter.

“State Department officials Victoria Nuland and Amos Hochstein are briefing a group of Democratic senators right now about the administration’s opposition to Ted Cruz’s Nord Stream 2 sanctions bill,” the journalist writes.

Senator Chris Murphy, as reported by Desiderio, criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for supporting the bill.

“He often misunderstands American politics. I think it would be better for him to stay out of it. This is not a very good policy for the United States, allowing Ted Cruz to tear us away from our transatlantic partners, ”the senator said.

Earlier it was reported that representatives of the Democratic Party of the US Senate were in an "uncomfortable" position because of the vote on the introduction of sanctions against the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2: either oppose US President Joe Biden, or vote against the sanctions.

The vote should be part of a deal to approve US President Joe Biden's nominations for State Department posts. Republicans promised to slow down the approval of nominees in the event that no sanctions are imposed on the pipeline.
