Over 1,300 weapons stolen during riots in Almaty

During the riots in Alma-Ata, more than 1.3 thousand weapons were stolen from weapons stores. This was announced by the head of the city police department Kanat Taimerdenov.

According to him, 1,347 weapons were in the hands of the rioters: 501 rifled, 807 smooth-bore and 39 gas-traumatic weapons.

As Taimerdenov recalled, protest actions began to be held simultaneously in different parts of the city, roads were blocked.

"As the number of protesters increased, they were joined by terrorists, radicals, extremists and criminals who called on the crowd to take aggressive, violent actions against the authorities and the police and to seize the akimat building," a high-ranking policeman said.

He also noted that the security forces defending the City Hall building on January 5 did not use weapons in order to avoid a large number of human casualties. "The police were forced to retreat," admitted Taimerdenov. As a result, the akimat was looted and burned.

According to law enforcement agencies, during the entire time of the riots, about 4.5 thousand people were injured, 149 civilians and 11 security officials were killed.

It is noteworthy that the criminals made several attacks on the morgues of the city and kidnapped more than 40 of their accomplices.

Recall that in early January, a wave of protests against the increase in gas prices for cars swept through Kazakhstan, which grew into riots, government buildings, police and military buildings were attacked. The most difficult situation has developed in Alma-Ata.
