Sweden says it doesn't want to join NATO

State Secretary of Sweden Karin Wallensten said that the country does not seek to join NATO. She reported this to Politico.

At the same time, Sweden plans to continue to cooperate with the alliance, she added.

“We want to be a good, strong NATO partner, but we are not looking to join,” she stressed.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania, Victoria Cmilyte-Nielsen, said that aggression against Ukraine and its territorial integrity could accelerate the entry of this country into NATO.

The deputy stressed that Russia's actions to prevent Ukraine's integration into the North Atlantic Alliance cannot deprive it of the right to freely join military or political blocs. Cmilyte-Nielsen added that NATO's promises at the Bucharest summit in 2008 regarding Georgia and Ukraine are still valid, despite Moscow's position.

Prior to this, the American political scientist and historian Dmitry Simes said that the United States needs to formalize the refusal for Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO, and also recognize that Russia does not plan to invade Ukraine.
