AP: State Department to announce evacuation of US embassy in Kiev on Saturday

The US State Department plans to announce the evacuation of the US embassy in Kiev on February 12, the Associated Press reported, citing unnamed US officials.

According to sources, the statement will be released early Saturday local time. It will say that the employees of the diplomatic mission will have to leave Ukraine "on the eve of a dangerous Russian invasion."

It is possible that some of the embassy workers will be moved to the west of the country, closer to the borders with Poland, so that the United States can maintain a diplomatic presence in the country.

In January, the US State Department allowed certain employees of the US embassy in Kiev and their families to leave Ukraine.

On February 11, US President Joe Biden called on ordinary Americans to leave Ukraine "right now."

The story of a possible “Russian invasion” of Ukraine has been actively promoted in the West since mid-autumn last year. The US has consistently pointed to Russia's alleged military build-up near Ukraine's borders, threatening Moscow with new sanctions if it escalates. At the same time, the Kremlin has more than once directly denied any plans to attack Ukraine.
