The US Congress urged Biden to reconsider the country's nuclear policy

A group of American congressmen called on US President Joe Biden to reduce the country's dependence on nuclear weapons and question the need to create and adopt new nuclear systems. This is stated in a letter sent to the American leader, reports RT.

The appeal says that the United States is moving towards spending a significant amount of $ 630 billion on the needs of the nuclear weapons complex until fiscal year 2030. It is noted that the president could reconsider Washington's course on nuclear policy.

“This is your best opportunity to take decisive action to reduce our reliance on nuclear weapons, strengthen arms control, and phase out the new nuclear weapons of war that [former US President Donald] Trump unnecessarily ordered to be built,” congressmen said.

In their opinion, Biden could reduce the number of nuclear weapons not only at home, but also influence their number abroad.

The parliamentarians also positively assessed the steps taken by the current administration on the issue of the START III treaty.

In early 2021, Russia and the United States agreed to extend START III for five years, until February 5, 2026.
