Member of the French National Assembly and adviser to French presidential candidate Valerie Pecresse Eric Ciotti said in an interview with BMF TV that Ukraine's potential entry into NATO is a provocation against Russia.
"We need clear proposals on Ukraine. Ukraine should not join NATO, since this is a form of provocation against Russia, and Russia should respect the sovereignty of Ukraine," the deputy said.
According to Ciotti, Western countries, including France, made gross diplomatic miscalculations regarding Moscow: “For many years we were cruelly mistaken. After the end of the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, we continued to build an enemy out of Russia, not considering that the world had changed ". As a positive example for the current French authorities, Ciotti cited the foreign policy of Charles de Gaulle, who visited the USSR in 1966 and advocated close cooperation between the two states.
On Sunday, February 13, during an election rally, French presidential candidate Pekress said that Western countries should honestly tell Kiev that the issue of Ukraine's accession to NATO is not on the agenda. Other participants in the presidential race adhere to a similar position: Marine Le Pen, Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Eric Zemmour.
