The Prosecutor General's Office is investigating 3,024 criminal cases following the mass riots in January, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said following a meeting of the Security Council.
Tokayev called the protection of the constitutional rights of citizens a top priority. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, an interdepartmental investigation group led by special prosecutors has 177 cases of riots and acts of terrorism.
A total of 779 persons are in custody. Among the detainees, 24 members of the organized criminal group were identified, 113 persons have a criminal record for murder, theft, robbery. After studying the personality, state of health and other materials of 109 citizens, the arrests were replaced with a written undertaking not to leave and a personal guarantee.
President Tokayev gave instructions to conduct a thorough objective investigation of the January events, ensure the protection of the rights of detained citizens and timely inform the population.
In early January, protests against a significant increase in motor fuel prices took place in certain regions of Kazakhstan, which escalated into riots. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced an attempted coup and turned to the CSTO for help. By January 7, the situation was stabilized; on January 19, the state of emergency was lifted throughout the country. During the riots, 225 people were killed, more than 4.5 thousand were injured, TASS reports.
