First, the safety and immunogenicity of the drug are to be tested, and the full cycle of trials is planned to be completed by the end of 2023. Vaccination will be two-fold: both doses will be administered as a nasal spray at a certain interval, the Generium explained. Researches are organized in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Smolensk, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, several hundred volunteers will take part in them.

Testing has already begun in the capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said yesterday. "Today, on the basis of six metropolitan polyclinics, we began a clinical trial of a nasal vaccine developed by the Generium company. A total of 660 people will take part in it: about 400 of them in Moscow medical institutions, the rest - in 11 centers throughout Russia," the mayor wrote.

What are the benefits of the nasal vaccine?

"I have a good attitude towards the nasal vaccine. Its advantages for protection against respiratory infections are obvious," says Ancha Baranova, a well-known biologist, scientific director of the Atlas biomedical holding, professor at George Mason University. "Since for airborne viruses, the entrance gate "Our mucous membranes, it is logical to build a barrier in the nose and throat, at the entrance to the body. With regard to the lyophilized vaccine of the Gamaleya Center, which was diluted and used as a nasal solution, such data have been obtained previously." At the same time, Baranova noted, the use of a nasal vaccine allows you to build two levels of protection - on the mucous membranes and in the blood.

“If the trials confirm that the nasal vaccine will work, then we will solve the problem of non-sterilizing immunity. It is known that the virus can get on the mucous membranes of the vaccinated person and multiply there. Such a person may not get sick himself, but shed the virus and infect others. If his mucous membranes are protected, it will cease to be a source of infection," the expert explained.
