Moldova - Parliamentary majority votes for law on prevetting

Moldova (bbabo.net), - The parliamentary majority on Thursday voted for the law on "prevetting" in the third, final reading. It was supported by 54 deputies of the ruling Action and Solidarity party, infotag.md reports.

Olesya Stamate, chairman of the parliamentary commission on legal issues, appointments and immunity, explained the need for the law to be adopted in the third reading by the fact that the law is "complex" and required more time for editing. It noted that no changes had been proposed between the second and third readings.

The law provides for a preliminary check ("prevetting") of candidates for the positions of members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors and the Superior Council of Magistracy - each candidate will be tested for integrity. This will be done by a special commission of six members - three proposed by parliamentary factions (according to the principle of proportionality) and three proposed by development partners. Checking property and income will affect not only candidates, but also their relatives.

The composition of the commission will be approved by 61 votes of deputies. The decision of the commission will serve as a legal basis for not admitting a candidate to further selection. However, the commission's decision can be challenged in the Supreme Court of Justice. The law will be limited and only valid until the end of 2022.
