Last month, a court sentenced the monk to 3.5 years in prison on charges of inducement to suicide, arbitrariness and violation of the right to freedom of conscience. The verdict by the defense was appealed.

The extremism case is based on videos that have been deemed expertise to propagate hatred against followers of Islam and Judaism.

Shortly before being deprived of the rank of church and excommunicated from the church, monk Sergius recorded a video message in which he called the situation with the covid "pseudo-pandemic" and accused the authorities of creating an "electronic camp of Satan", where, according to him, Russian citizens are planned to be placed.
