UN Special Rapporteur: What is happening in Gaza is an unprecedented war crime

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - What is happening in Gaza can be described as an “unprecedented war crime.” This was stated by the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Occupied Palestine Francesca Albanese, reports the Lebanese channel Al Mayadeen.

“I looked at the specific cases and we found a lot that needed to be addressed and described in a way that did not fit into the ten thousand word report that we submitted,” Albanese added.

According to a UN official, "international humanitarian law has been distorted and blatantly manipulated to justify genocidal violence." The UN official added that “acts of genocide have been confirmed and were committed against the entire population, adults and minors.” The problem, according to the speaker, "is not limited to the Israeli occupation raiding the Gaza Strip."

Albanese also noted that “there are documented cases of violence committed against Palestinian civilians by Israeli soldiers themselves. These include acts of humiliation, murder, massacres and disregard for cultural and religious sites. These incidents happened in plain sight, and my role was to highlight their significance by labeling them as genocide."

She added:

“This is something that South Africa was ahead of us on, which initiated the legal route through a case filed at the International Court of Justice against Israel on charges of genocide.”

Albanese called on Western countries to “take decisive action to stop the atrocities taking place in Gaza,” questioning their long silence on addressing the situation in the region.

Francesca Albanese said she received threats after publishing a report on Israel's genocide in Gaza. She voiced all this when she answered questions from journalists after presenting a report entitled “Anatomy of Genocide” to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday, March 26.

“Yes, I do receive threats. Nothing yet that I think would require additional precautions. Pressure? Yes, and this does not change either my commitment or the results of my work,” she said.

Albanese did not disclose who made the threats or specify their nature. However, she mentioned that since she took office in 2022, she has been under constant pressure.

“It was a difficult time,” she said. “I have always been under attack from the very beginning of my mandate.”
