Protests over rise in gas prices continue in Kazakhstan

Over the weekend, popular protests began to flare up in western Kazakhstan over a sharp rise in gas prices. The cities of Aktau and Zhanaozen became the epicenter of the unrest. Citizens demand to reduce the price of gas from 120 to 60 tenge, reports “Vzglyad”. On Monday, workers from the Kalamkas and Karazhanbas fields began to join the demonstrators. “The protesters are meeting shift workers from the Kalamkas field. They brought a tent to the square, ”Sputnik Kazakhstan said. Work at the Kalamkas field has been suspended. In total, about 2 thousand people gathered in Aktau.

Workers also went on strike at the Tengiz field. Meanwhile, in Zhanaozen, about 1,500 protesters gather in the main square. A food point was organized for them in the tents.

“The demands of the protesters are becoming chaotic: from the resignation of the government to the abolition of waste collection and lower prices for food,” the agency said.

It is noted that the building of the mayor's office is guarded by special forces, there have been no arrests yet. The police are keeping order. There is no mobile internet in the city center. Catering establishments and shops have not yet opened.

A government commission has started its work in Aktau. It includes employees of the presidential administration. The Commission was instructed to find a mutually acceptable solution to the problem.
