217 million TV sets to be produced this year

The specialists of the analytical company TrendForce processed the data for 2021 related to the TV market and prepared a forecast for the current year. According to them, sales in the first half of 2021 were affected by the distribution of money to the population in connection with COVID-19 in the United States, which caused a boom in the consumer market. At the same time, TV makers continued to restock panels, pushing up their prices. As the pandemic subsided in Europe and the US in the second half of 2021, life returned to normal and pandemic-related stimulus measures were phased out, resulting in lower demand. At the same time, rising prices for raw materials and shipping led to an increase in the costs of brands, which began to pass these costs on to buyers, increasing retail prices.

TV brands were looking to two big year-end sales, Black Friday and Singles Day in China (already overtaking Black Friday in sales and becoming the biggest shopping day of the year globally, both online and in general stores). However, this time the sales figures were comparatively low. Rising prices led to a decrease in demand, so that in 2021 as a whole 210 million TVs were sold, 3.2% less than in 2020.

According to TrendForce, panel supply and capacity availability in 2022 will be "sufficient", eliminating the risk of major fluctuations in TV panel prices. The severe impact of the pandemic on Southeast Asia and emerging markets, as well as the surge in panel prices in the last half of the year, has forced TV brands to reduce their range of small 23.6-inch, 32-inch and 43-inch TVs in favor of more profitable models. As a result, pent-up demand was created. With panel prices leveling off, it will allow TV brands to boost sales. It is expected that 217 million TVs will be sold in 2022. This forecast is in line with 3.4% growth compared to 2021.
