The United Nations is interested in the problem of the impact on the climate of video game development studios

Playing for the Planet, a group of 32 video game studios, has released a report on their 2021 climate change progress. The Alliance was created and exists with the support of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Over a million trees have been planted with Playing for the Planet. The association attracted about 130 million gamers to topics that are related to the environment. During the year, 7 new game studios and 7 trading companies joined Playing for the Planet. Approximately 60% of alliance members have declared their intention to achieve zero carbon emissions or significantly reduce them by 2030.

The report states that 30 studios have joined the Green Game Jam initiative for 2021, tripling the membership. It was created to teach millions of players to take care of nature and help it.

The association managed to raise $800,000 to support organizations dealing with ocean and forest issues.

The total audience of players of 32 members of Playing for the Planet exceeds one billion people. With the support of TiMi Studios, the Young Green Game Jam initiative was launched, in which students from more than 300 universities take part. UNEP Head of Youth, Education and Advocacy Sam Barratt sees the video game industry as a new ally in achieving zero emissions and a better environment.

Major players in the video game industry launched Playing for the Planet in 2019. The association is intended to combat the climate crisis. The alliance includes Microsoft, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Ubisoft, SEGA and many other companies.

Last December, major record labels Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group entered into a climate pact with independent companies. The association intends to jointly achieve zero emissions by 2050. As part of the agreement, the companies will exchange experience, ideas and resources. The signatories hope that hundreds of other labels from around the world will join the pact by the summer of 2022.
