Cryptocurrency advertising became the most expensive for placement in Telegram in 2021

According to the Vedomosti publication and data from a study by the advertising exchange in Telegram channels Telega.in, in 2021, the most expensive placement in Telegram was advertising for cryptocurrency and various resources related to it. The cost of a thousand impressions of such ads in popular channels by third-party advertisers reached 6,700 rubles (€78).

In second place in terms of value, advertisers had text ads in popular investment-themed channels. They cost clients up to 3,400 rubles per thousand impressions. The cost of advertising in channels about business and startups was up to 2,100 rubles per thousand impressions.

Experts estimated that the Russian advertising market in the Telegram messenger grew by 70% in 2021 and reached 21.7 billion rubles.

Against this background, official advertising from Telegram, and not through advertising groups, immediately became popular. It is cheaper for advertisers, and many channels immediately filled non-removable advertising blocks about cryptocurrency.

On October 26, 2021, Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced that the messenger would soon feature ads called Sponsored Messages. Durov explained that most Telegram users would notice such messages. The minimum CPM for a sponsored message on Telegram is €2, and the minimum budget to run an ad campaign is €2 million.

On November 4, the first ad called sponsored messages appeared in Telegram, which led to the channel of the founder of the messenger.

On November 6, 2021, Durov announced a subscription to cancel ads in Telegram at the request of users, so that they would have a paid opportunity to avoid this non-switchable and very intrusive messenger option.

On November 7, the first third-party advertising appeared on Telegram, placed through the official platform. Basically, these are advertisements for cryptocurrency channels or exchanges, as well as fashion accessories. Moreover, these ads cannot be deleted, they are located at the bottom and in general often do not correspond to the topics of the channels, which does not correspond to Durov's statements.

On November 23, Durov promised that there would be no official advertising on popular channels that belong to officials and various government agencies.
