Man jailed for three years for pirating Nintendo Switch games and must pay Nintendo $14.5 million

Dominican resident Gary Bowser has been convicted of pirating Nintendo Switch games and is ordered to pay Nintendo a total of $14.5 million. However, he was sentenced to more than three years in prison.

He was convicted of running websites and designing devices for the Team Xecutor organization, which allowed people to run pirated games on their Nintendo Switch consoles. After his sentencing a week ago, Bowser agreed to pay Nintendo another $4,500,000 in damages. In December, the court issued an order ordering Bowser to pay $10,000,000.

In 2020, the DOJ arrested Bowser, along with Max Luarne, the mastermind behind Xecutor, who brought in investors and developers. Yuanning Chen, who oversaw the management of ChinaDistrib, a manufacturing and distribution company, was also charged.

Nintendo continues to pursue an aggressive anti-piracy policy for its games and consoles. He also regularly shuts down sites where people can download pirated games. Nintendo released a press statement thanking the US government for Bowser's detention. The amount of fines shows how seriously Nintendo and the US government take piracy.
