Tu-144 and Concorde are replaced by Overture

The largest US air carrier American Airlines has agreed with the developer of new generation liners - based in Denver (Colorado) company Boom Supersonic - to purchase up to 20 supersonic aircraft.

“American Airlines and Boom Supersonic today announce the airline's agreement to purchase up to 20 Overture aircraft with an option to purchase 40 more. American Airlines has already paid a non-refundable deposit for the first 20 aircraft. The Overture aircraft is expected to carry passengers at twice the speed of today's fastest airliners," American Airlines said in a statement.

Derek Kerr, chief financial officer of American Airlines, said the company is "looking to the future" and will be able to provide new services to its customers.

According to Boom, the production of Overture aircraft will begin in 2025, and passenger transportation will be carried out by 2029. The aircraft will carry 65 to 85 passengers at a supersonic speed of Mach 1.7 and a range of 4,250 nautical miles (7,800 km). The airliner will be able to fly from Miami to London in less than five hours, and the flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu will last three hours, the company notes.

Boom's supersonic airliner is still in the early stages of development. Recently, a prototype aircraft has been tested in a wind tunnel, and it has yet to make a test flight.
