Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Seres and tech giant Huawei have unveiled the first hybrid crossover, the Aito M5, running Harmony OS. Richard Yu, Executive Director and CEO of Huawei Huawei Consumer Business Group, said the car shipments would begin on February 20.
Huawei claims that the crossover is superior in performance to the Model Y. The Aito M5 is capable of running on both electricity and fuel.
Earlier, the IT giant said that it would not make cars on its own, but would provide its technologies to other companies, for example, autopilot systems.
The Aito M5 is powered from the mains and uses the Seres REEV DE-i platform. The crossover is equipped with two electric motors that have a peak output of 150 and 165 kW. The car accelerates to 100 km / h in 4 seconds with an average fuel consumption of 0.8 liters per 100 km.
The Aito M5 is priced at more than $ 39,000, less than the Model Y, which is nearly $ 44,000. Yu says the hybrid car outperforms Tesla's electric car in peak power and range. He also said that the Aito M5 is equipped with double-layer soundproof glass.
The car uses Huawei's Harmony operating system, which allows the vehicle to be equipped with a touchscreen display for setting functions, watching movies and listening to music.
Huawei launched Harmony OS in 2019 after the Trump administration listed the company as a threat to U.S. national security. However, the IT giant has denied the allegations. Previously, the company was disconnected from Android, and it was forced to develop its own OS.
Last week, Chinese startup Nio unveiled the ET5 electric sedan and AR glasses that will reduce the need for car displays. Deliveries of electric cars will begin in September 2022 at a preliminary price of $ 51.2 thousand. In January, Nio showed its first ET7 electric sedan, the shipments of which have not yet started.
