Canon educates users on how to get around counterfeit cartridge warnings

Due to a shortage of chips, Canon is forced to release cartridges without DRM chips, so the built-in anti-counterfeiting protection in printers with warnings about the fictitious "danger" of counterfeit cartridges began to get in the way.

The company had to publish on the website an official recommendation for users to ignore warnings from their MFPs.

A list of models affected by this "bug" has been published.

The website explains the official "reason": the global shortage of semiconductors:

“Due to the ongoing global shortage of semiconductor components, Canon is currently facing challenges in sourcing certain electronic components for MFP cartridges.

To ensure an uninterrupted and reliable supply of consumables, we have chosen to ship them without chips until normal supply is restored.

Using consumables without electronic components will not adversely affect print quality, but some advanced features such as detecting toner levels may be affected. "

The technical support website explains that in some MFPs, the level of remaining toner on the device can suddenly change from 100% to 0%.

In this case, reinstall the cartridge.

In other MFPs, if a "counterfeit" cartridge is installed, the device reports an error. In this case, to continue printing, just click "I agree" (I Agree).

Here, too, the toner level can suddenly change from OK to Empty, Canon writes.

This story suggests that the ban on printing with counterfeit cartridges does not protect the printer from damage at all. The suspicion arises that in this way manufacturers are simply stimulating sales of original cartridges, which bring the main profit.

It's no secret that printers are often sold for about or below cost, with minimal ink and toner. At the same time, the manufacturer earns the main money on the sale of "original cartridges", in every possible way opposing the supply of ink / toner from third-party manufacturers. As a result, original inkjet ink has become one of the most expensive liquids on the planet.

Third-party cartridges and toner are referred to by manufacturers as “counterfeit”, “counterfeit” and “substandard”. To "protect users", the latest cartridge models began to be equipped with a special identification chip, in the absence of which the printer sometimes refuses to work.

Even in the example above, we can see that the MFP can mislead the user, showing the level of toner in the "counterfeit" cartridge is 0%, although it is in reality 100%.

To Canon's credit, in its MFPs, all you need to do is ignore meaningless warnings and work in peace. Some other manufacturers have a worse situation. There, the cartridges come with a regional seal, and the printers firmly refuse to print without a subscription to branded ink.
