Chile announces tsunami warning from volcano in Tonga

The National Emergency Management Office (ONEMI) of Chile on its Twitter page warned of a tsunami threat in six regions of the country after a volcanic eruption in the Kingdom of Tonga.

"Based on new estimates from the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service, the Chilean Navy has declared a tsunami threat to the coastal areas of the Los Lagos region," the report said.

The agency later extended the tsunami red alert to the coastal communities of the Arica y Parinacota, Tarapaca, Atacama, Coquimbo, Los Rios and Los Lagos regions. The department ordered the residents of these regions to evacuate to a safe area.

In seven other regions of the country, the Chilean authorities recommended leaving the beaches.

“There are sea fluctuations, you need to wait for a decrease,” the emergency services of the Kuril Islands warn, which can be reached by tsunami waves formed after the eruption of the underwater volcano Khunga-Khaapa. This has become a cause for concern for residents of several countries at once, including Japan, the USA, Fiji, Samoa, Australia and New Zealand. And in Tonga, the king had to be evacuated.
