Strong earthquakes are expected in the Kuriles and Kamchatka this year. Vladimir Kosobokov, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Ura.ru about this.
“If we talk about strong earthquakes, then, of course, these are the Kuriles, Kamchatka. Since the strongest earthquakes in the world occur there, ”the specialist said during the conversation.
At the moment, there is no specific information, since, based on the available data, it is impossible to make an accurate forecast, Kosobokov pointed out.
The head of the laboratory of seismic hazard of the Institute of Physics of the Earth RAS, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Alexei Zavyalov added that Kamchatka, the Kuriles, the Commander Islands, Primorye, the Baikal region are among the most seismically hazardous regions of Russia.
Earlier it was reported that another earthquake occurred near the tsunami-destroyed Kingdom of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean, TASS reports with reference to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
