Scientists at the American Johns Hopkins University said that there is no evidence of the effectiveness of lockdowns to suppress the spread of coronavirus. The results of studies on the effectiveness of quarantine measures and self-isolation are published in Studies of Applied Economics.

Lockdowns in the first wave of coronavirus helped reduce deaths in Europe and the US by 0.2%, but at the same time caused large economic and social costs, according to researchers. At the same time, as scientists note, a meta-analysis allows us to conclude that lockdowns had practically no effect on the situation in healthcare. Thus, the introduction of the self-isolation regime contributed to a decrease in mortality by only 2.9%.

It is noted that scientists reviewed about 20 thousand studies, and only 24 of them were suitable for inclusion in the meta-analysis.

Earlier, the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, said that today there is no talk of introducing a lockdown in Russia. According to her, the number of coronavirus cases will grow, but the country already has clear, proven anti-epidemic measures and diagnostic tools.
