The unusual properties of these proteins have led to the emergence of myths about their harm to the body, the specialist pointed out. Burlyaeva explained that lectins are proteins with an oligosaccharide in their chain. Lectins are credited with a negative effect on the digestive process and the absorption of vitamins and minerals, an increase in the permeability of the intestinal walls and damage to red blood cells.

This is a delusion, said the doctor. Burlyaeva explained that some people really should be wary of products that contain lectins. We are talking about those who suffer from diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

“Some lectins can aggravate the course of diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, but not cause them,” the expert explained.

She recalled that these proteins perform important tasks in the human body. Their binding mechanism is essential for the functioning of the immune system.
