Virologist warns of possible dangers of nasal vaccine against COVID-19

Virologist, director of the US Center for Global Virological Network Konstantin Chumakov said that the nasal vaccine against COVID-19 can be more dangerous for the body than the intramuscular one. He spoke about this in an interview on the YouTube channel “Advise, doctor!”.

According to him, the nose is very closely connected to the brain by the olfactory nerve, and therefore all medications that are planned to be given through the nose undergo a very large safety assessment.

“Nasal vaccines can be unsafe because that nerve can carry the virus or antigen to the brain. You have to be very careful with this. It's not as easy as it seems," the virologist explained.

He noted that intramuscular vaccines cannot affect any vital organs and protect the nervous system so that there is no neuroeffect.

Earlier, Anatoly Altshtein, a virologist at the Gamaleya Center, spoke about the start of clinical trials of the Sputnik V nasal vaccine. According to him, the Sputnik V nasal vaccine differs from the original one not only in the form of introduction into the body, but also in the emerging immunity.

The specialist explained that the drug enters directly into the nasopharyngeal cavity, and the epithelium of this area is very vulnerable to infections. He added that the nasal vaccine gives fewer side effects, but the best option for protection against coronavirus is combined protection - both intramuscular and nasal.
