The sports doctor compared the Valium drug found in the sample with meldonium

The drug, which was found in the doping test of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, is prohibited, but at the same time protects the heart and brain during intense exercise. About this "Championship" said sports doctor Nikita Karlitsky.

As a source familiar with the situation and an interlocutor in the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR) previously told RBC Sport, there were no drugs in Valieva’s doping test, but traces of trimetazidine were found. In turn, the sources of The Guardian reported that the substance found during the doping test is not able to affect the results of the athlete.

“Trimetazidine is prohibited. It's like meldonium. It protects the heart and brain during intense exercise,” Karlitsky said.

Trimetazidine is a prohibited substance, which since 2015 has been included in the class S6b stimulants (stimulants related to specific substances) and moved to the newly created subclass S4.5c, since its pharmacological effects can be qualified as a modulator of cardiometabolism.

According to him, as a rule, all such drugs are analyzed within two to three weeks during the doping test. “But after a positive result, he could be sent for rechecking, holidays, then all the cases. But the fact that it coincided now is something mythical, ”the doctor believes.

No drug traces were found in Valieva's doping test. “To do this, you need to get a therapeutic exception and enter data on its use into the Adams system. When WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency. - RBC) has doubts, they should not report it, ”he concluded.

Russian figure skaters won the team tournament at the Beijing Olympics on February 7th. Valieva performed the short and free programs. The day before, on February 8, the official award ceremony was supposed to take place, but it was postponed due to legal consultations between the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and ISU (International Skating Union).

On the morning of February 9, the Inside the Games portal reported that the reason for the delay in the award was a doping test of one of the Russian skaters. Later, the portal clarified that it was about Valieva. An additional problem, according to the publication, is Valieva's age. She is not yet 16 years old, and therefore officially she cannot be accused of violating anti-doping rules. This is the reason for the protracted litigation.
